About Kiwanis

Kiwanis Club of Fort Lauderdale. Key #: K01097.

Member of  Kiwanis Florida Division 23.

Click to see our Charter dated 1923The Kiwanis Club of Fort Lauderdale was chartered on September 15, 1923 as the 19th Club chartered in the State of Florida and recognized by the Kiwanis International Organization.

During the past 86 years many of Fort Lauderdale's Business, professional and political leaders have been active in our club including Judge G. Harold Martin, Gene Whiddon and Judge Floyd Hull.

In 1961 the club sponsored the formation of the Kiwanis Club of Fort Lauderdale (Southside Chapter) providing an opportunity for leaders in the growing area of South Fort Lauderdale, Port Everglades and Dania Beach to serve.

Charter Members of the Southside club included but was not limited to, A.J. Ryan, Jack Bell, Doc Shupert, Dave Ligh and Judge Jose Gonzalez.

In 1999 the two clubs merged becoming Kiwanis of Fort Lauderdale, continuing to serve the community through it's many projects such as Every Child a Swimmer, Christmas in July and our quarterly street cleanup project in a local community neighborhood.

G. Harold Martin was instrumental in building Key Club(our high school sponsored leadership program) from a group of individual clubs into an organization. Today, Key Club meetings are held monthly at Strannahan High School , where the students of today learn to be outstanding business and community leaders of tomorrow. Due to his vision along with a few other Kiwanis Pioneers from our club North Fork Gardens (We Build Inc.) a low-income, section 8 facility that provides subsidized housing to area residents was constructed June 17, 1970. With 65 units, it is home to over 96 kids and their parents.

Our Kiwanis Club of Fort Lauderdale lives up to our Kiwanis International motto:
"Serving the Children of the world".

We invite you to serve with us to make a better Community.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

Kiwanis Name
The name “Kiwanis” means “we trade” or “we share our talents.” It was coined from an American Indian expression, Nunc Kee-wanis.

Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things happen!

As Kiwanis clubs and members, we see it everyday!
